Prioritizing Sustainability: The Importance of the environment in Decelera

Introduction

When it comes to Decelera, there’s something incredibly special brewing on the sunny shores of Menorca. This island where we experienced 8 of our programs is becoming an epicenter of entrepreneurial innovation, as its landscape buzzes with the energy of startups, investors, and entrepreneurs coming together to share ideas and decelerate. But there’s a key ingredient in Menorca’s recipe for success that sets it apart: a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

Our Link between Business and Environment

In the agony of our modern economy, it’s easy to view business and environment as separate entities. Yet, in reality, they are intricately connected. Businesses rely on the environment for resources, from raw materials to energy supplies. The environment, in turn, is significantly affected by the actions of businesses — be it through waste production, greenhouse gas emissions, or resource consumption.

This interplay is even more pronounced in a place like Menorca, where the island’s stunning natural beauty plays a critical role in attracting entrepreneurs and startups. Therefore, it’s not just a moral imperative but a business necessity that the startup events held here remain sustainable and environmentally conscious. Not only that, we also take a very deep look into the green approach of each year’s applicants to make sure we are supporting a valuable project for humanity.

How do we tackle pollution and waste?

Transitioning towards hosting the most sustainable event possible isn’t an overnight process, but here are some steps that we have been taking during this years that make big difference:

Sustainable Venues: Choose venues that prioritize eco-friendly practices. This could mean using renewable energy, minimizing waste, or encouraging public transportation.

  1. Digital Solutions: Reduce paper waste by digitizing event material, tickets, and promotional resources. During the program we communicate everything we can through our app.

  2. Local Partnerships: We try to opt for local partners to reduce unnecessary processes and waste. By doing this not only we take care of the environment but also the place we the program takes place and its people.

  3. Green Partnerships: We focus on looking for the best option in terms of sustainability when choosing collaborators, even if that means sometimes an extra effort or cost on our side.

  4. Promote Sustainability: We use our platforms to share with attendees all we do and know about sustainability. This could be through social media posts, panels, or simply incorporating sustainability practices into the event itself.

Conclusion

Hosting Decelera in the most sustainable way possible in Menorca is more than an environmental obligation — it’s an opportunity to lead by example, stimulate innovative thinking, and foster a business community that respects and thrives on the island’s natural beauty.

For example this year we took a huge leap forward thanks to Genaq, one of our partners that manufactures atmospheric water generators, machines that are able to turn air into water. This incredible innovation has significantly decreased our reliance on plastic bottles. During Decelera 2023 we’ve saved an entire pallet of water, equivalent to about 1,800 500ml plastic bottles! That’s 900 liters of water.

By embracing sustainability, we can ensure that Menorca continues to be a vibrant, inspiring hub for startups and entrepreneurs — today, tomorrow, and for generations of innovators to come.
